People are the Key to Business Success

23 Nov 2017 12:30

Every organisation relies on its people to support and drive its success and growth. This was the focus of the People Summit on the 16th November.

The conference combined strategic insight and practical advice for businesses that rely upon their people for success. It examined the links between successful business and excellent people performance. Minister John Halligan TD Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development opened the conference at the Aviva Stadium.

Pathfinder was delighted to sponsor the pre-conference dinner on the 15th November at the RDS. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet the speakers and guests.

Tom Byrne, Partner with Pathfinder, chaired the afternoon session on ‘Engagement, Motivation & Resilience – Best Practice’. He commented on the event: “It was a privilege to chair the afternoon session. I was most taken by the interesting and varied approaches to work and our workplaces, and staff and customer engagement, across many sectors.”

Interesting take-home messages that resonated with us included:

  • Facebook’s HR Manager EMEA, Gordon Lynn, emphasised that the focus should be on “employee strengths and passions, not their shortcomings”.
  • “Millennials have left the building, welcome to the Centennials!”. Dr. Mary Collins, Senior Executive Development Specialist for the RCSI, examined the benefits of a multigenerational workforce. Each generation brings with them a distinct set of skills. For example, Centennials are the young generation with extensive digital knowledge. This knowledge means they work differently and approach challenges and opportunities in alternative ways. The older generation may lack the digital fluency of the younger generation, but they contribute their vast knowledge and experience gained through decades in the workforce. The take-home message for business is the need to adapt to harness the opportunities that come with a multigenerational workforce.
  • “Staff who are inspired are twice as productive as those who are satisfied”. The Group HR Director for the Bon Secours Hospital Group, John McPhilips, presented an example of People Strategy from the private sector.
